Vegetable and Hamburger Chowder

Ingredients

  • 1/4 lb salt pork or bacon
  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 2 Carrots chopped
  • 1/2 C diced celery
  • 1 med Onion chopped
  • 2 C cooked tomatoes
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1/4 C rice or barley
  • 1 1/2 qts boiling water
  • 2 C cubed potatoes

Instructions

  1. Fry salt pork until browned. When crisp remove pieces of pork and brown hamburger in fat; add carrots, celery, onion, tomatoes, salt, pepper, barley, pork and boiling water. Heat to boiling and simmer slowly 1 hour. Add potatoes and cook another hour or until potatoes are tender. Serve as a main dish for luncheon or supper. Serves 6 to 8.
