LOW FAT, LOW CHOLESTEROL BISCUIT RECIPE FOR PETS, PALS & PEOPLE (BARNEY’S BITS WITH PUMPKIN)
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- cup ½powdered dry milk
- cup ½wheat germ
- tsp ½salt
- tsp ½garlic powder
- 6 Tbsp margarine or other shortening (I use 3 Tbsp shortening + 1 Tbsp butter 1 Tbsp molasses & 1 Tbsp peanut butter)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- cup **For flavor variety and color add 1mashed or pureed cooked vegetables or carrots or pumpkin
Instructions
-
Combine white flour, wheat flour, wheat germ, powdered milk and salt in a large bowl.
-
Cut in shortening until mixture resembles cornmeal.
-
Beat the sugar with the egg. Then stir in the sugar-egg mixture. Add the mashed or pureed vegetables gradually and make a stiff dough.
-
Knead on a floured surface until dough is smooth and pliable. Then roll out to ¼” thickness and use your cookie cutters to cut your shapes (or just use a pizza cutter to make tinier bits).
-
Bake at 325 degrees until lightly brown (about 30 min). Makes about 2 dozen biscuits (or lots of bits!).
-
** If you decide not to use a cup of vegetables, substitute water. Please add the water gradually as necessary to make a stiff dough.
